During the Vietnam War, a village that American forces are using to spy on the Ho Chi Minh Trail has its sacred elephant killed by the North Vietnamese Army because they were cooperating with the Americans. The villagers need an elephant for a ceremony that will occur within the week. Captain Sam Cahill, an easygoing man who is heading home, and his hotheaded replacement Captain TC Doyle scrounge up another elephant with the help of sneaky supply chief warrant officer David Poole, luckless farmboy Lawrence Farley, and short-timer Harvey Ashford, and transport it across South Vietnam to get it to the village on time, running into all sorts of transport problems, personality conflicts, and an NVA squad that wants the Americans out of the village. To keep the loyalty of a village during the Vietnam war, a U.S. Army officer and his unit struggle to deliver it a live elephant. In something Walt Disney would actually have been proud of, Operation Dumbo Drop carries the old Disney tradition of making the audience feel good without regard to it's lack of plausibility. Danny Glover and Ray Liotta, along with Dennis Leary walk a tightrope of comedy in a real war-zone situation and carry this off with a real blend of comedic and acting talent. The acting in this movie is terrific. The cinematography and all the little things that go the extra mile. . like setting, direction, musical score, sound, etc, all come together nicely. And the elephant is a great character actor! The only problem is, of course, it is a terrible war and nobody is dying. This is something traditional with the Disney family genre, but in this picture it really becomes completely implausible and will probably turn off some viewers. That said, if one can ignore the actual ridiculous nature in this total lack of plausibility, I found this picture quite easy to like. This film is an appalling glorification of the US involvement in the region. Typical Disney in that the Americans are always the good-guys and the VC are all evil little devils.<br/><br/>Would be suitable for children if it REALLY was based on the truth but like many Disney films it paints to rosy a picture of that terrible war. <br/><br/>Of course they could never make a film like that in Vietnam, even today. Its obvious that it was filmed in Thailand because characters that are supposed to Vietnamese speak either Thai or the language spoken by the Karen tribesmen who live in Northern Thailand and Burma. I suppose we should at least be grateful they filmed in the right general region and at least they did used an Asian elephant. I would not have put it past them to film it in California and use an African elephant (as I have seen done in other movies).
